A close to 2007...

I'm not exactly sure what I want to say except that I just wanted to squeeze one more post into the December folder.
This hasn't been a great year. In alot of ways I've been sliding backward this year. (maybe even, this decade)
But I am trying to think of all the things I've got to be grateful for as well;

~I'm still married (I've been hearing about alot of divorces lately)
~I have three really great children

(I was going to say that they are practically brilliant- but that is as much a challenge as it is a blessing...) :-)
~As far as we know all 5 of us are in good health
~My husband has a job and now that he has tenure he would have to do something pretty drastic to get fired!
~All 3 of my children (INCLUDING the teenagers) are active in church -you don't know how big that is.
~Both my cars run (at the moment anyways)

You know... I will be adding to this list this week.
I need to think on my blessings just a little more often!
So for now.....
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Post formatting

I have yet to figure out how the formatting on this post window works. It is driving me CRAZY! What is worse is that the 'preview' looks exactly like I want it to, but the post comes out completely off. sigh, oh well. sorry if things look odd for a while. I will try to figure this out.

Why empty trash cans need lids…

Had I thought of it sooner I would have taken a picture and had it here for you to view, but for better or for worse there is no photo.

We have a few trash cans. At least one of them we use around the yard for weeding or whatever. Well, it got left near my garden, the lid got left off, it rained. I figured—okay that’s good, I can water things with rain water sometime. Well, later (and by later I mean at least a month) it snowed, the water froze. Not that big a deal, right? As we were pulling out of the driveway one evening my husband noticed the trash can across the yard and we mentioned that, for fear of the ice causing the can to burst, we should tip it over tomorrow. My 9yr old son obviously overheard these comments because after he got home from school the next day (I was, of course, not home) he went and tipped the can over to break the ice and empty the water for us. Well, it turns out we had a guest. Lying in the middle of the large ice chunks was a perfectly (*PERFECTLY*) frozen squirrel. It was really creepy. Eyes open, claws perfectly positioned out in front of it. It looked like the taxidermy animals at a nature museum.

Two of my children thought it was “totally cool!”, while the other thought it was “the most disgusting thing! It died in our yard!” I had kind of mixed feelings. I hate the squirrels, every year they try to make a home in our attic. (EEeeww!) And they destroy every birdfeeder we try to establish. I am constantly threatening to get a BB-Gun and sit stealthily in the backyard waiting to ‘bump them off’, literally, as they run across our deck railing. But at the same time the scene seemed sort of oddly tragic.

Later on, my daughter turns to me and says “Hey Mom. Do you realize you finally killed a squirrel?” “Yea, I was thinking the same thing when I was standing over it.”

End of the story; Somewhere in the woods behind our house some four legged animal will find its own form of frozen dinner, you will always remember to put a lid on your empty trash cans and our family now has one more to add to our “one-word-that-tells-a-whole-story" list: squirrel-cicle.

A two-hour derail…

There was a snowstorm at the end of last week, followed by a not-entirely-freezing day(which allowed a little melting) followed by a night of howling winds and variations of precipitation from light pleasant sprinkle to hail, with periods of snow and sleet thrown in. This morning, although the sky was blue and sun shining, the thermometer on my kitchen window was still working its way UP to 20 degrees. So you can imagine the sheet of ice that encases not only our cute little snowman(sure, it strengthens him…) but also the bottom couple inches of my husband car tires. (My tires are usually more accessible due to the fact that we drive them around so much.)

A couple of useful things to know about me;

1. Monday is like my “reset-button day”. Chaos of the week before has settled, Sunday was it’s own kind of roller-coaster, and on Monday I attempt to pick up the pieces, look at the week ahead, plan out the general schedule of things, organize my planner and CLEAN. (Which generation of SAHM’s started using planners?!?) Monday is the foundation day for the rest of the week and although the week is not necessarily ruined by an “off” Monday, a good Monday makes the next 6+ days go SO MUCH BETTER!

2. (and this is part of why this particular Monday is so important)

I love to be alone! I love my family very much and my truly favorite times are when we are all together AND GETTING ALONG! But, I’ll be honest, my second favorite times are ALL BY MYSELF. I think better, I work better, everything just flows better. So much so that some days I’d even like to send the dog away for the day too!

Today was to be my last Monday alone for the foreseeable future. After this the kids have a vacation and my husband’s teaching schedule changes (I am sure I will write about ‘the new schedule’ another time!) in which, suffice it to say, he will be home on Mondays. This Monday was also important because the last I-don’t-know-how-many Mondays have been infringed upon by delays, holiday or half days or child(ren) home with illness (I’m thinking back to early or mid-November sometime) and because it is the last Monday of school before Christmas.

Knowing this would be my last Monday alone, I spent the time last night to really plan out my day. I had a layout of the day with blocks of time for certain things and even a priority list for each block of time. I planned my work and I was going to work my plan! (I should have known right THEN that there would be trouble.)

But today…ah today… a two-hour derail.

Okay, they are actually called a “2-hour delay”. For those of you in sunny California or, “freezes once every decade AZ”; a two-hour delay is something the school districts use to give the transportation department an extra two hours to clean up the roads in the hopes of still being able to have an actual school day. Because no matter how useless a bunch of squished up school days become, the districts still get their money from the state if the students show up. So, for the safety of the buses, and their precious cargo of course, schools call a “two-hour delay” and start exactly two hours later than the usual time. Don’t get me wrong, I often enjoy the extra time this allows me to stay under my nice warm down comforter!(Thank you to the grandparents that gave us that!)

It’s just 2hours you say? What’s the problem? The problem is that I have one child in each of our 3 schools with three different start times. Normally this works well because we only have one bathroom and I am able to keep them out of each others’ way. But for a delay, that means that the elementary school doesn’t start until just after 11am. In spite of delaying the beginning of the day they do not extend the end of the school day! Which means now that I have dropped my youngest off at school, stopped for 5 minutes at the library, stopped at the town hardware store and the corner deli to find a bag of salt (for the driveway not the table) my high-schooler will STILL be getting out of her last class at in about 45 minutes! That is SO NOT FAIR!

From toast and eggs...

This is a link to a cute little story by Mary Ellen Edmunds that happens to include what would normally be my two favorite recipes. ;-)

But today -

I BAKED!

(actually it was yesterday -you can't expect me to bake and post on the same day, can you?)

They are called "Mounds Muffins"
(I suppose the ones with almond slices on the top would be considered 'Almond Joy Muffins')

Nothing burned and I even made a substitute or two!
And ALL of the kids love them!!
It helps quite a bit to have friends that are great at cooking and baking, especially when they share recipes! Thanks L!

rara avis and My Blog Basics

"rara avis" - a friend of mine used it to describe me once. At first I didn't know what to think of it. But turns out I like it.

My Blog Basics

1)I am not an overtly paranoid person (my husband might disagree) but I'd like to make a few requests; If you know me, if we are important to you, then you already know all the names and locations you need to know. I will, therefore, be using initials, just 1st names, or even 'code names' for people I discuss. If you do happen to know the real names or places, I request that you refrain from using them in your comments. Should my friends or family decide to 'out themselves' (by comment or link), then that is their responsibility and BTW they should know what info NOT to put on the internet! **
(T,M& B: add stern look and waiving finger)
2)
I promise, I WILL have uncountable grammatical errors. Please ignore them.
3)You are NOT obligated to view, read or ponder my blog. I therefore feel no need to refrain from including things that I would normally never inflict upon you in a normal conversation, like giving boring details of my life, bragging about my children, regularly complaining about 'New Yorkers' and the like.
So, if you are still interested, welcome. -Christine

**you should consider EVERYTHING you put on the internet to be available to EVERYONE and accessible to them FOREVER.

Okay, I'm here. A blog.

I've been pondering starting a blog for over a year now.
What to name it? Should it have my name, not have my name. Real Name, fake name? By invitation only, open to public? Do I even have the time for a blog?.............
Oh well.
"Worry does not empty tomorrow of its troubles.
It empties today of its strength."
(I don't know who said it first but it is from one of my favorite Mary Engelbreit prints)
** I found an image of the poster. -Love this one!!**

So I decided to just get it going. So here I am!
No promises. I can't guarantee frequency, consistency or quality! So view at your own risk.
My very next post (probably even today) will tackle a few of my previous quandaries.

Welcome and enjoy!! If you find you don't enjoy or aren't enriched by your time here, PLEASE use your time elsewhere! Life is too short and time is too fast! (takes the pressure off me too.)
